Having previously collaborated on PRESENCE (VERSION IIB) at Opal Tapes in the UK ( opaltapes.com/album/presence-version-iib ), Duenn and Brian Grainger return to Psøma Psi Phi with ABSENCE. Recorded prior to PRESENCE, Psøma 17 is similarly a longform and minimal piece, built from long-distance file exchanges of different treatments and processing paths applied to a no-input mixer feedback session, originally laid to tape in Grainger's White Pillar studio, sometime around September 2018. Between the two of the far-separated artists, a transcontinental sonic exchange happened, with as little dialogue as possible - music as a reactive and observable environment for wordless methods of communication to take place. In the end, the resultant recording is a beautiful warmth of tones, softly bathed in the white noise of analog processing, round and carefully filtered to pronounce contours and subtle pulses moving beneath the surface of the drone - evidence of depth and implied pasts that, after time and careful consideration, are reduced to shadows and traces of previous forms, now echoes worn away in the erosion of resynthesis.
