about

Psoma Psi Phi has the honor and the pleasure of formally/physically introducing the extensive and expansive recording work of Yorkshire Modular Society to the world, in a five-disc box set canvassing ten different longform drone works from the first year of the project's sessions. YMS is a secondary moniker of Dom Schofield, elsewhere known as Oxynucid within the braindance, techno and acid circles he travels in, and represents (as the name would imply) his explorations with an ever-evolving and expanding modular synthesizer he has built.

Sonically, these drones recall some of the most evocative and essential drone recordings of decades past, from Eliane Radigue's Adnos to Alvin Lucier's Music On A Long Thin Wire, as well as fitting contemporaneously and comfortably alongside modern pioneers like David Burraston, Eleh and Richard Chartier. Further still, seasoned drone listeners will connect the humming vibrance of Yorkshire Modular Society's studies to elements of work by Yoshi Wada, La Monte Young and Folke Rabe. For us here at Psoma, these recordings are destined to become just as perennial as the aforementioned, vividly elemental yet temperature-universal recordings that can be installed as a utility for therapy, sleep, meditation or simply an alternative to a "too quiet" environment. They are able to impart impressive low-frequency output at higher volume levels, and they are able to remain as discreet as a whisper at lower volumes - much like our recent five-part Noyzelab series of Cell Meditations, these are flexible audio tools that yield many possible presentations and experiences to many different types of listening.

A second archive of five more discs is forthcoming, and we would also like to suggest that the public look into YMS on Bandcamp, which offers a subscription that yields regular installments of synthesized excursions: yorkshiremodularsociety.bandcamp.com . We raise our glass to Dom and his pulsating ever-growing modular system that broadcasts from Yorkshire, long may they generate the frequencies that massage our brains into contented submission.
