about

Yasuyuki Uesugi arrives at Psoma with a unique voice, rooted in analog synthesis, noise music and deeply layered self-analytics. I Don't Notice That I'm Losing My Place is possibly the noisiest album in the Psoma catalog thus far, and to overlook this fact about it would miss part of what makes the catalog entry interesting, and to focus upon it would render Uesugi's work in the genre moot upon arrival. What we hear when we press play is a swirling set of feedback paths, oscillators tangled up in knots and humming, droning machineries plodding their cyclical functions downward into a type of entropic runoff. Uesugi's recordings feel as if they are the sound we might hear in the vacuum of space, if instead of being a soundless void, it were a densely filled threshold of sonic matter, an aggregate of all the cosmic detritus and hurling planetoid masses, populating the blackness behind the stars like billions of inkblots. There is a freefall to this type of music, and we enjoy records like this more as experiences rather than traditional interactions with sound. They require a specific level of willingness to be tossed into the tumult, a type of faith and subservience that most other art forms do not ask of the consumer. Uesugi seems to know this, and embrace it to a devastating degree, much like his forebearers in the field, and while many will spend seconds with this album before deciding that it sounds like all other noise albums before it, a few of you may yet be patient enough to see that Uesugi's work is very unique to his ears, hands and mind, and that I Don't Notice That I'm Losing My Place is in fact an apt description of how these recordings can completely dissolve your sense of time and space.
