about

Following his excellent analog synth exploration of J.G. Ballard's "High Rise", Mosca returns with a collaborative double-album named Sacred Space, consisting of two extended sessions of luscious drifting synthesis that effectively "score" two original paintings by artist/designer Michelle Haswell hanging on his studio wall.

The first of two, "Black (Sacred Space)," unfurls a wide cloak of dusky chords across a full hour's runtime, alternating between subtler sections of closed-filter light trails and fuller, reverberant passages that offer a dimly lit view of an overcast landscape in the evening, on the precipice of a great storm. The second piece, "Grey (A Passing Place)," provides a dense and foggy counterpoint to the deep breathing swells of "Black," with a thick haze of cloudy resonance that feels as if it could be made of evaporated sections of "Black" after the storm has passed.

Both pieces convey a beautifully mesmerizing atmosphere of darkness, where night is not a frightening time or place, but simply a respite from the brightness of the day. Listening to Sacred Space, one might find it hard to pinpoint where exactly the tonal and melodic shifts come to pass, that so effectively keep the recordings in motion and not quite definable as drone music, while maintaining the mystifying sense that these shapes are organic and elemental and alive, but almost imperceptibly slow.

Mosca will return for a third time later this year with Meditations, a massive quadruple-album set of intimate drones designed for various modes of disconnect.

NOTE: The digital edition of Psoma 35 contains extended mixes of both pieces, while the 2xCD-R edition contains special CD-only edits.
