about

Saito Koji is a prolific musician currently residing in Fukushima, Japan, who comes to Psøma with an album of two extended ambient pieces titled Winter Journal. These pieces, like Archive Deleter by Kazuya Ishigami, somewhat feel like more classic ambient recordings did in the early 2000s, especially the untitled-sides of tapes coming out of communities in New Zealand, San Francisco and Los Angeles. At first, Koji's sound seems informed by a guitar, but as it progresses forward and downward, it becomes harder to pinpoint what the sonic provenance is.

Winter Journal consists of two 21-minute recordings, "Fukashigi" and "Fuyu No Seiza", which slowly fill up like the foggy craters of a primordial Earth, dowsed in rain and wind for eons, the stuff of life (as Sagan would say) bubbling up from beneath the turbulence, crawling toward the surface from a dark and calm abyss. After a while, these pieces almost give the impression of an orchestra tuning up in extreme slow motion, thin lines of tone emerging from the din that gradually settle into a singing harmony, before parting to the side so another such sound may come forward.

Altogether, Winter Journal is a welcome addition to the growing Psøma catalog, and feels so classically informed that it already invokes a peculiar sense of familiarity, and with that, comfort. It plays out like a beckoning beacon in a snowstorm that warms your spirits and assures you that respite is almost here.
