about

Polysilicon is perhaps better known as Chris Moore, a producer who has been issuing varying shades of electronic music under the name While since the mid-nineties, starting with a track on Skam's MASK 400, and continuing onward via Chocolate Industries, Musik Aus Strom and even our beloved friends at Earstroke (see: Ourson's 'Collected Natures I-III'). His first album under the Polysilicon name is Phase Accumulator, and it exists in a very different part of the electronic music landscape than While recordings previously occupied.

Recorded entirely live using only a Yamaha TX216 and an Eventide H949, Phase Accumulator is a tableaux of droning timbres and machine minimalism that conjures blurry visions of color, temperature and light, which feel impossibly synthetic and starkly elemental, sometimes simultaneously. This kind of material should feel alluring and familiar to our long-time listeners, who are more than familiar with the glassy tones of FM carriers and operators, and the unorthodox shapes that this type of improvisational exploration often yields.

The thirty-six minutes offered here seem to convey a far deeper well, elongating the runtime by way of manipulated perception, and many of the pieces could continue to oscillate forever. Surrealistic, at times chaotic, but always fascinating and expressive in ways that even these words fail to describe, Phase Accumulator is a trip best taken with headphones or on a surround system with adequate low-frequency output, and an unexpected companion to the slow thawing of the Winter season.
