Leigh Coleman is a sound-artist residing in Sussex, experimenting with quieter than usual sonic sculpting that follows in the tradition of Francisco Lopez, Richard Chartier and Mika Vainio, among many others grouped into the so-called 'lowercase' movement. Her debut recordings have been distributed only to friends and family since she began working with sound, circulated unceremoniously as files initially, then a small number of nondescript CD-Rs shipped through the mail system with pressed flowers, tea leaves, seeds and other organic ephemera "dressing" the discs in clear plastic sleeves.
One such disc made its way to our post office box late last year, and made an immediate and distinct impression. The two extended runtime pieces offered here are new compositions, allowed to unfurl across multiple hours each, and were brought into the world after spirited correspondence with Coleman, discussing possibilities and philosophical approaches she had considered, but until now was hesitant to try. Psoma Psi Phi remains not just content, but exuberantly passionate about providing artists such as she a platform to make statements like these. In a world filled with noise, haste and a clamoring towards the efficient and practical, Leigh Coleman seeks to provide a counterpoint of consideration, something that conveys the opposite of these compulsions.
'The Old Strait Tracks' illustrates a love of the natural world, an appreciation for sound that is not music, and music derived from things other than sound. This sonic world offers a landscape of space, outside of time, awaiting you and only you to step into it and become its subject. Be still, close your eyes, and let it surround you.

Does the emperor have no clothes? Why should he, when he doesn't even have a body? Lopez has discovered entire universes in the edges of near-silence. Psøma Psi Phi
Fyans is one of many documenting his modular synthesizer studies here, however, he is one of the few among them who is able to make the machines speak, instead of letting them babble. Psøma Psi Phi
Minimalist compositions that take their time unfolding, bands of sound melting glacier-like from one end of the song to the other. Bandcamp New & Notable Aug 6, 2023
